About Joseph

Joseph "Joe" Carmichael is a senior at Ohio University--Russ College of Engineering and Technology.  He is majoring in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Math.  Joe and his teammates are working on the Thermoregulation Challenge, a Challenge to improve the quality of life of an Air Force Veteran battling Multiple Sclerosis.

Question & Answer

Why did you choose to major in Mechanical Engineering?

I love working in design and mechanics. I had always "tinkered" and built parts for my dirt bikes. I like working on real-world issues that impact the world in a positive way. I felt Mechanical Engineering would give me the experience I desired to pursue that.

Describe your experience working with QL+ I've been having a great experience so far.  QL+ is a great organization with an even greater goal in mind.  The communication and work dynamic are excellent. The biggest challenge we face in our project currently is understanding how human bodies work in terms of heat. Every body is different so gauging something for everyone will be a challenge for sure. The most rewarding part is knowing that everything we do while working on this helps someone in need. The fact that it helps someone who has served our great nation is even more rewarding.

What would you say to other students about QL+? I would encourage them to pursue work with QL+. They are helpful and encouraging.  Also, the projects are great and very inspiring.

What are your plans after graduation? I plan on either pursuing graduate school or diving right into industry.  I would prefer a career in the oil/gas or defense industries.

What has been the proudest moment of your college career? My proudest moment would probably be finishing the spring semester of my junior year.  It's supposedly the most difficult semester and I can definitely confirm that.  It felt great to finish that list of hard classes.

What three words best describe you? Diligent, Attentive, Inspiring

Thank you, Joe, for joining the QL+ Family and working hard to improve the quality of life of an Air Force Veteran!
