UTSA: MODIFIED CROSS COUNTRY SKIS

Our Innovative and Life-Changing Solutions

As part of Pineland Farms, the Veterans Adaptive Sports & Training (VAST) Program offers disabled veterans a variety of sports and physical activities, including cross country skiing.  Paralympics provides sit skis to the veterans; however, most of VAST’s participants lack the same upper body strength that a Paralympian cross country skier, thus requiring them to lean further forward in the sit ski to achieve momentum. The Challenge is to create a cross country ski seat/kneeler for amputees and those with spinal cord injuries that allows them to lean further forward than a traditional sit ski. The equipment needs to include a seat that allows the participant to kneel and/or place their legs further underneath them than a traditional sit ski allows.
