About Joshua

Joshua Baker is a fifth-year student at the University of Cincinnati, scheduled to graduate in May of 2019.  He is majoring in Mechanical Engineering and minoring in Mathematics.  Joshua is working on the Butt Brake Challenge.  The purpose of this project is to allow cyclists with weak grip strength, or amputees, to ride upright bicycles safely, using a paddle mounted on the seat so they can engage the brakes.  Joshua and his teammates are working with Scott Moro from the Adaptive Cycling Foundation.

Question & Answer

Why did you choose your major? I chose my major because I took engineering classes in high school and loved them.  I loved them so much that I retook one of the classed my senior year because I had an open spot in my schedule.  Originally, I was torn between majoring in either Chemical or Mechanical Engineering.  However, I discovered that I wasn't a big fan of Chemistry, so I chose to major in Mechanical Engineering.

Describe your experience working with QL+ so far.  What is the biggest challenge?  What has been rewarding?  Working with QL+ has been great.  Everyone that I have met so far through this project is a great person and I enjoy talking with them.  The biggest challenge so far is determining how we are going to distribute the percentage of braking between the front and the back brakes.  The rewarding part is knowing that our project is going to help someone in need and allow them to get back to what they love doing--riding bicycles.

What would you say to other students about QL+? QL+ is a fantastic organization that really does work to help as many people as they can.

What are your plans after graduation? I am considering three different ideas for after graduation. I am either going to get a job, take the LSAT and go to law school, or I am going to go to Officer Candidate School for the U.S. Navy.

What three words best describe you? Big Teddy Bear
