About QL+
Quality of Life Plus (QL+) was founded to generate research, development and innovations to aid and improve the quality of life for those injured in the line of duty for our country. QL+ has two principal focuses: identifying the challenges of those injured; and working with teams of university students and faculty to solve these challenges as part of their educational curriculum. QL+ serves disabled military veterans, first responders and those serving on the front lines.
Inspiration
Fighting for Life director Terry Sanders and cameraman Erik Daarstad on location in Balad, Iraq.
Jon Monett, Chairman of the Board, is the founder of the QL+ Program. In the fall of 2008, Jon was inspired by a feature documentary, Fighting for Life, produced and directed by Academy Award winning director, Terry Sanders. The film is a comprehensive portrait of American military medicine and chronicles individual stories of recovery and rehabilitation from injuries sustained in combat. The filmmakers had extraordinary access to combat support hospitals in Iraq, medevac flights with wounded soldiers, and military hospitals in both Germany and the United States. Mr. Monett is on the Dean’s Advisory Board for the Cal Poly College of Engineering. The Advisory Board was asked to suggest ways to increase the number of multi-disciplinary engineering projects and challenges the School of Engineering was presented with. With the combination of the Fighting for Life movie and the Cal Poly requirement, Jon Monett had a solution. Why not combine the needs of those injured in the line of duty with the needs of Cal Poly’s Engineering College and thus, QL+ was born.
