A History of QL+

Jon Monett, a resident of McLean, Virginia, was inspired to found QL+ by the nexus of two events.

The first was the feature film, Fighting for Life, a documentary that chronicles the moving individual stories of service members as they rehabilitate from injuries sustained in combat.

The second was a need at his alma mater—California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) in San Luis Obispo. As a member of the Dean’s Advisory Board to the College of Engineering at Cal Poly, Mr. Monett learned that the Department was seeking to increase the number of multidisciplinary engineering projects available to students.

It was Mr. Monett’s inspiration to combine Cal Poly’s need for multidisciplinary engineering projects with the unique needs of wounded patriots, like those featured in Fighting for Life.

Using proceeds from the sale of his company, Telemus Solutions, Inc., Mr. Monett’s founding donation led to the creation of the QL+ organization and the dedication of the first QL+ Laboratory at Cal Poly in March 2009. At this laboratory, QL+ harnesses the engineering and creative expertise of Cal Poly students and professors to develop innovations that improve the quality of life for those who have served our country.
